Access the school library online at library.wheatleypark.org

Here you can search through all of the library’s stock and see which books are available.
Also available through the Student Pages are a variety of online resources. Look out particularly for the Science Resource Centre which covers Science in its widest sense and the Philip Allan Reviews. We subscribe to the Issues Series and many other resources can be accessed via your Public Library website using your Library card.

The Library

Wheatley Park School has two libraries. The Farndell library is based in the sixth form centre, holding our non-fiction texts. It is available for study and research. The Peer Learning Zone (PLZ) homework club is available here after school Monday to Thursday from 3-4 for anyone who needs a little help from staff or mentors, or just needs a space to get on with their work.
The fiction library is based in the heart of the English faculty in the John Milton Centre. Library lessons for Years 7, 8 and 9 are held here daily in the library to promote reading and showcase a wide range of books. This Library is also open at break and lunchtime for students to borrow books or sit and read. Various activities are organised such as Book club, Chess club and occasional film screenings. Look out for posters about the days when these are running.

Staff

The Librarian is Mr Ansell. He is a member of the Oxfordshire Book Award steering committee and the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). He also loves reading and knows a lot about not only books, but also graphic novels and manga. Mr Ansell can help any student find a book appropriate for their level and interests so do please ask; he likes a challenge! He also may (or may not) have been on a space shuttle, trained in three martial arts and joined a Nepalese dance party on top of a mountain.

Library Events

Occasional special events have seen participation in the Guinness World Record attempt for creative writing and quizzes, a number of debates for all years in the school and outside speakers. This year, World Book Day is on the 2nd of March and will see some dress up, some challenges an author visit and more. We will also participate in this year’s ReadingZone picture book competition, which saw two of last year’s entrants named as runners up in this national contest.
Our book club will soon start looking at the Oxfordshire Book Award longlist, and their votes will help determine the shortlist and the ultimate winner. Take a look at some of the amazing books that have been chosen this year:

With the help of the Friends of Wheatley Park School, and Blackwell’s bookshop we have been able to have authors to visit to talk about their work and sign copies of their books. We look forward to having more, so stay posted.
The Friends of Wheatley Park have also made it possible for us to participate in BookBuzz. Every year all of our Year 7 students are given a free book. This year’s selection has been very well received:

For many years Wheatley Park has entered a team of Year 7s and Year 8s in the Oxfordshire heat of the Kids Lit Quiz. In 2009 a team of Year 8 boys won the Oxfordshire heat, won the UK final 4 days later and went on to the World Final in Edinburgh in August 2010.

Library Resources

The library has a number of resources to help with your learning and research, both in hardcopy and online. In addition to our books we subscribe to a number of daily newspapers and several educational review publications, including Philip Allan Reviews and the Issues series. You can see what the library has to offer here.
